Moving to El Salvador?

I'm moving to El Salvador in about a year and I have some questions. I'm trying to figure out if there's a visa that I need or if I have to apply for temporary residency? I plan on being there for about a year or two. No more than that. I'm basically saving for this next 12 months and will be going there with about 10-12k to live off of while I'm there. I've read on some websites people saying its a nightmare to try and get temporary residency and that if you're there for 90 days or less you don't need a visa and just need to leave the country but it can't be any neighboring countries like Guatemala or Honduras. So since I'm not going to be working and will only be living on what I take there in savings, I don't have money to be having to fly back to the US and back there just to be out of the country for the 72 hrs that's required to re-enter. Any info that can be provided as to what kind of visa I need or even if there IS one and/or if I have to apply for temp residency would be greatly appreciated. This will be my first time out of the country so I'm not familiar with the process or who/how to contact the agency that issues visas. Also, is it common that people there speak English? I know Spanish is the official language and I speak it, but just curious.
