How did the nobility retaliate in the Great Fear??

Did they? I thought that quickly just led to the Reign of Terror, among many other things, until Napoleon came into leader. The people loved and trusted him and what he stood for, so things calmed down some. Also, wars were waged, which really helped with nationalism.
