Why doesn't Russia want the Ukraine and Georgia to join NATO?

Many parts of the russian people and government still don't totally trust the NATO. There is a feeling, that the goal is to surround the country with allies and rockets, just like in the times of the Soviet Union, to take its breath. Maybe some officials in the NATO still think this way indeed. Therefor, a line of more or less neutral states between Russia and the members of the NATO would be prefered from their point of view.
